The Friends of St John’s Church

The Friends has been established primarily to reach out to the wider community within our Parish and beyond to people who may regard St John’s as their local church but would not be considered as regular or committed worshippers.  The aim is to provide an opportunity for involvement in the maintenance and continuity of the church building for those of us in the community who feel an affinity with St John’s and draw comfort from its’ continued existence.

We are keen also to attract support from past members of the congregation who may have moved away from the district, and from a wider group of supporters, whether or not local, who feel an affection for our lovely church.

The focus of the Friends is on generating new funding for the maintenance of the essential fabric of the building.  Areas where the Friends will contribute  include the cost of building repairs, towards major items such as the heating system, electrical wiring, refurbishment and maintenance of the organ, furnishings, and towards the upkeep of the churchyard.

The Friends is formed as a sub-committee of the PCC and we agree our priorities and objectives in consultation with them. All the income that we generate is paid into church funds and is clearly identified in the church accounts.  All expenditure from this funding will also be identified in the accounts.  It is very important that our members are well aware of how their contributions are being spent.

Members of the Friends receive their own periodic newsletter which keeps them informed of all church activity and social events.  They also receive a copy of  St John’s annual report and accounts.

Membership is via either an annual subscription or for life through a single payment.  Knowing the financial pressures we all face, we have set the annual subscription at a minimum of £10, with suggested options of £20, £30 and £50, if you feel you are able to contribute slightly more.  Life membership can be obtained with a payment of £150.
